<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\nDance Artist | Filmmaker | Researcher<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Tanin Torabi is a multi-award-winning filmmaker and choreographer acclaimed for her innovative single-take short dance films created in Tehran, described by critics as \u201cpushing the boundaries of screendance.\u201d In 2021, Dance Magazine<\/strong><\/em> recognized her as one of the \u201c9 Screendance Artists You Should Know.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Over the past decade, Tanin\u2019s films have been showcased at more than 300 film festivals and academic institutions worldwide. She has conducted workshops at esteemed institutions such as The Place London<\/strong>, Irish World Academy of Music and Dance<\/strong>, Villa Arson<\/strong>, ArtEZ Arnhem<\/strong>, Mov\u2019in Cannes<\/strong>, and Tetralab Screendance<\/strong>, to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Her recent accolades include the esteemed Cinedans Grand Jury Prize<\/strong>, ZED Festival\u2019s Best Original Storytelling Prize<\/strong>, and the AVIFF Festival Jury Award<\/strong> for her 2022 film Until<\/strong><\/em>. Her 2017 film The D\u00e9rive<\/em> <\/strong>remains one of the most frequently showcased dance films at festivals, earning numerous awards including the Best Film Prize<\/strong> at the San Francisco Dance Film Festival<\/strong>, Dance Camera West<\/strong>, and Southampton Film Week<\/strong>. Over the years, Tanin has received awards in categories such as Creative Vision, Best Artist Film, Best Inspirational Film, Best Inspiring Woman in a Film, Best Experimental Film, and Best Documentary. Critics and juries have described her works as rebellious, wordless yet expressive, inspiring, evocative of real life, emblematic and poignant, and empowering to women. In 2024, Tanin received a 7-month bursary from the Institut Fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> to conduct choreographic research at the Cit\u00e9 Internationale des Arts <\/strong>residency in Paris. She was also invited as an Associate Artist for Dance Limerick<\/strong> in Ireland, where she conducted workshops for the joint programs of the University of Limerick and Light Moves Festival<\/strong>, while continuing her choreographic research. She previously have received residencies from Montpellier Danse<\/strong>, the Flanders Institute<\/strong>, and the Berlin Akademie der K\u00fcnste<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Currently, she is the artist-in-residence at Villa Arson<\/strong>, Nice (2024\u20132026), in collaboration with Coll\u00e8ge de France, where she actively engages in pedagogical programs, offers mentorship, and works on her screendance projects and writings. Her courses include Movement in Focus: A Playground<\/em>, and she collaborates on interdisciplinary offerings and collaborations with Centre National de La Danse<\/strong>, ENSA<\/strong> and more. Tanin is also a regular lecturer at the prestigious Sciences Po University<\/strong> by giving her course Embodied Knowledges: Understanding, Communicating and Preserving Through Body & Lens.<\/strong> She also engages with interdisciplinary research practices including research on dance and architecture organised by Bita Azimi<\/strong> at \u00c9cole Nationale Superieure d’architecture de Paris<\/strong>, and supported by CND<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As a choreographer and performer, Tanin has collaborated with numerous international artists, including NYC-based choreographer Yoshiko Chuma<\/strong> (Head in the Sand<\/em>, Zooma \u2013 Dead End<\/em>), curator Cassandre Langlois<\/strong>, choreographer Sina Saberi<\/strong> (Narges<\/em>), and music artist Setareh Rahnama<\/strong> (Sheno<\/em>), among many others. Tanin holds an MA in Contemporary Dance<\/strong> from the University of Limerick <\/strong>in Ireland and a BA in Sociology<\/strong> from BIHE <\/strong>(Iran). Her most recent film collaboration is the choreography and co-production of The Guardian<\/strong> short dance film written and directed by Milad Sanaei<\/strong>. Tanin’s newest film “In Passing<\/strong>” is currently in the research and pre-production phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2024, she presented collaborative performances with figurative painter Gabriel Schmitz<\/strong> (Somewhere Along the Line<\/em>) and visual artist Nathalie Joffre <\/strong>(Constalatas<\/em>, Nuit Blanche Paris). Her choreography and performance work spans various formats including film, installation, and stage.
